Paris, Friedrich Klincksieck, (1845-) 1849. 2 Vols: text & portfolio with loose plates. Large folio. ca. 54 x 35.5 cm. (6), 11, (1) pp introduction & 4 to 8 pp. text to each plate. With 72 full-page lithographed plates of birds, drawn from nature, by Paul Louis Oudart, and by Alphonse Prevost, very beautiful handcoloured by the artists themselves, titled in French and Latin, and signed by the artists underneath. Contemp. uniform three quarter full-grained dark-blue morocco, gilt title on front, edges gilt.
Fine large paper copy of the first folio-edition of a rare "Fine Bird Book", published in 12 parts from ca. August 1845 to after December 1848, each part with 6 coloured lithographs and with its corresponding text. The work aimed to update the earlier important birds books by Buffon (1770-1786) and his successors Temminck & Laugier de Chatrouse (1820-1839), and with it Marc Athanase Parfait Oeillet Des Murs (1804-1878), added no less than 72 new bird plates to the "Illustrated Catalogue Raisonné of Birds". Most of the lithographic plates were made by Paul Louis Oudart (1796- after 1859), who personally coloured them as well. Oudart, an outstanding French bird painter and lithographer, was a pupil of G. van Spaendonck, and started to exhibit bird paintings at the Salon of 1819. He made a voyage around the world on the "L‘Uranie" and made drawings of exotic birds. Oudart was the first French artist who reproduced his natural history paintings in lithography, and was the official painter of the Musée d‘Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Some 20 plates were designed by Alphonse Prévost (active between 1830 and 1850), an ornithologist, and official bird painter on various French voyages of exploration, who too worked for the Natural History Museum in Paris. Like the works of Buffon & Temminck-Laugier de Chartrouse before him, the work by Des Murs was published in folio and in 4to. Some very sl. foxing, but a fine large paper set of a rare book. Fine Bird Books p. 70; Ronsil 844; Nissen, Vogelbücher, p. 105; Zimmer p. 168; for the artists, see Jackson, Dict. of Bird Artists, p. 382 & 399. (See illustration)

Presentation-album - Nordwestbahn 1868-1872. Vienna, Oscar Kramer, ca. 1870. ca. 33 x 43.5 cm., incl. wide margins. (Vienna, 1872). Oblong large folio. 30 Thick cardboard leafs. With a large original watercolour of the Northwest Railway Station at Vienna, ca. 17 x 36 cm. (excl. margins) , and 29 large albumen photographs, ca. 18.5 x 24 cm. (excl. margins). Added: An albumen photograph of "Der Nordbahnhof, erbaut von Hoffmann". Orig. full-grained red morocco, with broad borders of decorative open-worked brass mountings with 4 central brass mounting pieces on sides topped with brass title labels reading: "Nord - West - Bahn - 1868-1872", brass mountings at the 4 corners topped by a malachite stone, and a large central decorative brass mounting with the Austrian coat of arms, a heavy brass lock, white satin endpapers, all edges gilt.
A very luxurious presentation album, documenting the early beginnings of the Vienna Northwest Railway line. The concession for the Austrian Northwest railway-line was granted in 1868 and for its construction a private developing company, the "K.K. priv. Nordwestbahn Gesellschaft", was founded in 1870. The line would run from Vienna over Znaim, Iglau, Deutschbrod, Kolin to Jungbunzlau. The director was engineer Wilhelm Hellwag (1827-1882), who earlier had worked on the Brenner railway-line, and the chief architect was Carl Schlimp (1834-1901), who designed most of the station buildings along the line. In 1872 the Nordwest Station in Vienna opened, and the transport of both people and freight started. The Vienna Northwest Station buildings were built by Theodor Reuter after designs by Wilhelm Bäumer (1829-1895), an architect and painter. The commemorial album was offered in 1872 at the festive opening of the "Nordwestbahn Station", and was probably presented to the station‘s designer, Wilhelm Bäumer, or otherwise to the company‘s "baudirector", Wilhelm Hellwag. The fine watercolour of the central station of Vienna in front of the album, could well be the work of Wilhelm Bäumer. The watercolour is sl. foxed. A very fine album with photographs in a spectacular brass decorated binding.

Deeply moving, monumental work, commissioned by a mother in loving memory of her deceased child, Gerda Ellen Elisabeth von Siemens (1892-1909), who died in Cairo, during a voyage to Egypt, only 17 years old. Gerda was the daughter of Arnold Wilhelm von Siemens, member of the industrial family, and Ellen von Helmholtz, daughter of the natural scientist Herman von Helmholtz. To commemorate her the Siemens family also erected a wall-mosaic, made by Puhl & Wagner, in the Ascension Church on Mountain Olive in Jerusalem. In the present work, Ellen von Siemens, describes and depicts the life of her daughter from her birth, illustrated with photographs of all possible things she took part in, including letters written by her and important documents. Both volumes are most richly and beautifully laid out and decorated in colour and gold, even though the work must have been printed in a very limited number, intended for family and close friends only. Fine copies of an exceptional work, kept in beautiful protective boxes. (See illustrations)
