Fine sammelband of three alchemist works in first editions. Not much is known of David Kellner, a native of Gotha. He received his degree in medicine in 1670 and wrote works on surgery and bone injuries. He later developed an interest in metallurgical chemistry, a discipline he wished to release from the influence of alchemy, such that in 1700 he wrote a baroque comedy about the "the harmful Society of Alchemists". Partington ii, 731; Ferguson i 456; Wellcome iii 383. Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (armorial bookplate to upper pastedown and blindstamp to first leaves).

Murray, John. Switzerland. Handbook for Switzerland and the Alps of Savoy and Piedmont. Including the Protestant valleys of the Waldeneses. John Murray and Son, London [and] Maison, Paris. 1839. This copy has slightly different pagination to the copy in the Lister bibliography. It also mentions a map on the title-page and at end of the introduction but there is no map in the book. There is an engraved frontispiece of Berne and an engraved folding panorama of the "Lac du Zurich dessine depuis L‘Hotel Baur". Akhmatova (pseud. for Gorenko), Anna (Andreevna). Belaya Staya [White Flock]. Petropolis and Alkonost, Skt. Peterburg and Berlin, 1923. 8vo (19 x 13.5 cm). 142 pp. including half-title and title. Original printed wrappers; frayed at edges, spine slightly worn.
Provenance: Akhmatova, by presentation to Salome Andronikova. Very good association copy of the fourth, enlarged edition of this celebrated collection of poems (which includes also ‘U samogo morya‘), inscribed by Akhmatova to her close friend Princess Salome Andronikova, the subject of her poem ‘Ten‘ [Shade]. Andronikova was a well-known literary hostess before the Revolution and later went into exile. This copy was incribed to her by Akhmatova in 1965, one year before her death, when the two friends were reunited in London after nearly fifty years apart. Turning away from the paganism of her first works, and moving beyond her very personal early style, ‘Belaya staya‘ begins a new, prophetic phase in Akhmatova‘s career. Though lost love remains an important theme (indeed a number of poems touch upon the disintegration of her marriage to Nikolay Gumilyov), the experience is now explored within the larger horror of the World War, and reflects Akhmatova‘s deeply Christian engagement with the manifold grief of human history. Akhmatova commented later "For some reason everybody thought that this book was less successful than ‘Chetki‘. The book was published under a very difficult situation. Transportation was shut down - it was impossible to send books even to Moscow. The whole printing [of the first edition] was sold in Petrograd."
